Recently, I was informed about the American contribution to the passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 in Uganda. For those of you who are lost, the Ugandan government recently imposed a bill that seeks the death penalty as punishment for those who practice homosexuality. What many don't know, and what Im rather embarrassed to say, is that this injustice was sparked by three American evangelicals who held a three day conference about the ills of homosexuals and how "they" threaten the God-based institution of marriage. They even went as far as to say, during the conference, that homosexuals "often sodomize young boys". Uganda is already an environment that has much conservative Christian influence receiving the attention of many evangelicals and evangelical dollars every year. And one Ugandan politician saw this as insight he needed to act upon immediately and proposed the unjust bill.
This yet another opportunity for America do some positive for a change and influence Uganda economically by ceasing some its funding until this senseless bill is revoked. Its also another example of how fundamentalism of any religion can be dangerous. I am disgusted with the evangelicals who spread this poison that I believe Christ himself would be fighting. You see, I thought Christian thought and practice was to highlight and enhance the plight of the luckless, loveless, landless, an other victims of social structural arrangements, not create more barriers of justice that exhibits the illogical quest of forced conversion. I think what we need is an honest discussion about how Christians should interact with those that practice homosexuality. I think we have a duty to protect them from this type of dogmatic pervasiveness.
What do you think? How do you feel about those that practice homosexuality? Should we feel anything at all? Or should we just be satisfied with the systematic dogmas of Christianity that makes life comfortable???
love the sinner, hate the sin...i definitely think it shouldn't be ignored and Christians need an opinion
Michael! You have a blog, I like it!-Emily Schreck
I agree with Emma. Us as Christians need to not only seek how to properly handle homosexuality, but people of different religions as well.
First of all, congratulations on getting a blog. Despite the fact that I do have one, I never had the patience to actually write a full post.
As you might know by now, I am not a Christian and I am not an American. Thus, my opinions can be bit different than yours.
1. I believe that any religion wants the person to be happy no matter what. The whole idea about God is way above us and I hate it when people drag his name down to justify their petty causes. Who says being straight is the only way to be happy or the only way to live "right"? Why do some people think their idea of God is the only ultimate truth and regard all the others who refuse to abide by their rules as criminals and sinners? God is just and God is there for our wellbeing. I seriously regret it when some people drag his name to justify their prejudice and stupidity.
Second, "Yeah, Americans are the greatest savior of them all";)
Interesting post.
What do you mean by "the systematic dogmas of Christianity that make life comfortable"?
Human beings have a tendency to want to live comfortable with this sufferring around us. I think many of us use dogmas and justifications through scripture to feel oblivious to it.
So are you saying that dogmas and justifications through Scripture have been used to feel oblivious toward the 'suffering' of homosexuals, like the ones who may soon face life imprisonment (not death) for practicing homosexuality toward minors?
What about the threat of the/present suffering of the families and the society and the children in Uganda at the hands of the homosexuals who are destroying the cohesiveness of the family unit, which is so cherished in Uganda?
And to my homie Nomin, thanks for the reply. . . Although we might disagree, I like your honesty and your unique perspective of Christians in America.
Well, there's a lot of things here that bother me.
I think one of the fundamental problems of this post is that you haven't painted the whole picture of the situation. The Ugandan perspective, the evangelicals' purpose, and the homosexual agenda have not even been mentioned in the article. There are huge pieces of vital information are missing from this news headline, it's not even true anymore. And I think that you have done an unjust service to the viewers of this blog who aren't getting the full story in order to make totally informed comments.
You said: "I'm talking about those who live in society and are unjustly and wrongfully targeted as poison in the society. In my opinion, the religious fundementalism is the problem. I believe in a strict separation of church and state. This is key to my argument."
This tells me that you may have been misinformed on the Ugandan issue or you are purposely misrepresenting it. The homosexuals aren't innocent. They are infecting others with HIV and recruiting minors into their 'ranks' to the detriment of the society and cherished family unit and children of Uganda. The evangelicals didn't impose the laws and are not to blame for the idea of the death penalty against homosexuals. They spoke at a conference in which they were supported by the gov't officials of Uganda in particular. And the separation of church and state means that the state will not regulate or infringe upon the free religious worship in its jurisdiction. What does that have to do with homosexuals and the death penalty in Uganda? Who is being stopped or hindered from worshiping or practising their religion in the way they choose? Separation of church and state is irrelevant man.
You said: "But who are we to determine that? Let's leave that ultimately to God and attempt to preserve justice where we can."
Well, I would ask in return, who are we to preserve justice if we are not qualified to enforce it. Logically, 'preserving justice' would be a just thing to do, would it not? You are, by virtue of posting this blog article, stating that YOU ARE qualified to determine what justice is, and that, according to your judgment, the death penalty in this situation IS NOT justice. So, you must be saying that YOU have a capacity to determine what JUSTICE IS.
What's the point of discussing something if you yourself are stating that humans can't decide what justice is? Is your post then, unnecessary?
Why does it seem like your perspective is that the homosexuals actually are doing nothing wrong in Uganda? They are. And why does it seem like your perspective is that the evangelicals who protest the homosexualization of society are the disgusting ones?
Homosexuality: I despise it. Every Christian should. God does too. The Bible should inform the lifestyle preferences for Christians. That's the only thing that makes sense. If Christians felt any other way about it, I'm certain that would be sin. Perhaps, instead of getting so agitated about a government that is doing what they deem helpful and necessary about them, though it may be to the distaste of some, we should tell them how God feels about them, and what He says they should do instead....
...Like, "Repent and believe the gospel." I'd suggest the same for 'Nomindazvezda'.
May God be with you and bless you Mike Mo! :)
Nomin, I want to say these things in the clearest and most honest way possible so that you do not take me as one speaking from his own opinion. It is not my intent to make enemies, although, when one speaks Bible-based truth, that can easily happen. So, on the topic of homosexuality, I will only address you from what is "God's will" and not my "own delusion". I hope that's ok with you, since it is what you asked for.
Homosexual people practice that which is an abomination in the sight of God, and those who recognize that sin is the reason why Jesus Christ went to the cross. It always was, and always will be something that is hated by God. Throughout the Bible the wickedness of homosexuality is testified to, most notably, in the record of the destruction of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, which was destroyed by sulfur and fire along with all its inhabitants and the entire valley and all of what grew on the ground... Of course I find no reason to believe that homosexuality was the ONLY abomination practiced there, but it is the one found remarkable in Genesis 19.
It is harmful to any society when people begin to embrace without shame that which God, their Creator, deems as against His declared will. Why? The consequence of sin is the wrath of God. So when people begin to openly, and shamelessly embracing and practicing and parading their sin in any society, and it spreads and strengthens, this kind of behavior, according to God's word, stores up God's wrath that will be dealt out on the day of judgment. In times past, and I'm sure in times present as well, God's judgment for sin equals trouble for any society. And in the end, it means eternal burning for those who shamelessly practiced it.
Christians have the source that provides man with the best way and the only way to live that is pleasing to God, the Bible, because it is God's word and provides mankind with His declared will. Plain and simple.
People who do not believe in Jesus Christ and His God and Father should serve and worship and listen to Him and choose the religion of Christianity because God commands them to and it is in the best interest of not only the followers of Christ, but all people, to listen to their Creator who has all authority in heaven and on earth, to kill and give life, to cast into hell and preserve for eternity.
God said, through the prophet Isaiah, that His truth is the only wisdom worth following.
Whether or not people have been homosexual before the Ugandan headline is irrelevant. God created the world and made it clear that the helper and partner suitable for Adam was woman, whom Adam named Eve. "God's will" is that "a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24) What ancient greeks believed is about homosexual practice is simply a display of sinful man proclaiming themselves wise and becoming foolish. The fear of the LORD is wisdom, and God said that homosexuality is wrong, therefore, the beliefes of ancient greeks prove to be wrong. The fact that animals practice same-sex mating does not prove the normalcy of anything. Black widom spiders kill their mates once they consumate, that does not mean that women should be allowed the right to kill their husbands after conception. All of creation, since the sin of Adam, has been cursed, and will not be freed from its bondage to corruption until the restoration of creation after the judgment of all mankind by Jesus Christ. Also, the fact that homosexuality is said by God to be a sin, just as the choice of sexual relations with a mother or aunt is sin, tells us that yes, homosexuality IS a choice. Also, the very fact that Christians have been transformed by the saving power of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the indwelling of His Holy Spirit further prove that homosexuality is a choice that can be changed.
I said that the Ugandan perspective is that homosexuality poses a threat to the cohesiveness of the family unit. A family is a married man and woman and their children, should they have any, and as we know this group expands into larger and larger groups of people as reproduction takes place and generations continue. This is the pattern that the Bible shows, from Adam and Eve onward, for what is a family and the only model of group living that can be capable of accomplishing the blessing God pronounced in Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth..." If homosexuality were feasible and honestly capable of being considered normal, that lifestyle would have to be capable of doing what God said do to the first family, and they can't. It doesn't work, because it's not normal, it's not God's will. And I never said that family members wouldn't have any bond if homosexual was practiced by one of its members. I said that the Ugandans feel that homosexuality threatens the family unit. And it does, if homosexuality were to become pandemic, families would cease and the Ugandan society would end eventually. No more family unit. No more anyone.
As for those heterosexuals who infect others with HIV, it is never the case that bad behavior can be justified by other bad behavior. What's the point? And you are wrong about the children who practice homosexuality. There are groups of homosexuals that kidnap boys and use them as wives. That does not mean the children want to practice homosexuality or are gay by preference.
The idea that heterosexuality is right originates in Scripture, and before it was written in the Bible, God said it. God's design, how He created humans, and His word all reveal that homosexuality is not only a sin, but it's obviously as unnatural as trying force a plug into another plug. With all due respect, that's idiotic.
If you would like proof for any of the statements I have made here, I will be obliged to give them. I almost feel bad not citing the references while typing this, but I'll leave it up to you to ask for the referential proof since I've purposefully included the original source: God.
And Nomin, you could change your mind about homosexuality or any other ideology or philosophy or public policy or social issue and it would not matter a bit if you never humbled yourself to the rule and worship of your Creator. The point of any religious speech or discussion should always lead to or be aimed at a profitable solution. And the Christian faith provides man with the solution that transcends any rectification of social injustice or perverted public policy: reconciliation with God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When Adam sinned in the garden, and despised the glorious Creator who made him and blessed him and gave him authorit on the earth, he lost the grace and help and success afforded Him by His Creator. He was shamed by his sin, corrupted in his nature, cursed by God, and denied access to everlasting life and cast out of the garden of Eden, away from the presence of God. All throughout history, God has been working to restore man to the place where he can once again enjoy God's glory and beauty and magnificence, and never disrespect it again by disobeying His command. He created a people from a man named Abraham and redeemed his offspring again and again and again and again from the oppression of others and from their own sins and evil. Finally, after subjecting His people to slavery once again, He devised a master plan to rid His people of their sins forever and make them His humble and thankful servants and worshipers. Jesus of Nazareth came and lived the sinless life no one has ever lived, died as the perfect sacrifice for sin that no one could be, and was raised from the dead in order to give eternal life to those who humble themselves to trust and obey Him alone. The Bible and the gospel of God is the only message that can give man a right view of his Creator, his world, his purpose, and himself. God is perfect. Man is sinful. Jesus Christ died so that those who trust in Him and obey Him will be saved from God's just wrath against sin and be transformed back into the image of their Creator, like they were when He first made them, and dwell securely and eternally in perfect harmony with their Creator like they once did, with no tears, no sadness, no pain, no sickness, and no sin or death, which caused everything bad and unnatural.
Like I said, although the government in Uganda is doing what they deem necessary for their society, the only remedy that will do truly lasting good is the gospel. And so I say to you and to others, "Repent, turn from your sins, seek God while He may be found, submit to His word and believe and obey the gospel of Jesus Christ." That's where life restored and life eternal resides.
Christians aren't perfect, that's a fact, but they are forgiven and they have the help of the world's Creator to continue repenting of their sins and pursuing holiness of mind, character and action, as well as everlasting freedom from His eternal wrath in hell against sin, all because the Creator wanted to give His creation what was truly great and right and good, forever, Himself and His glory.
May God be with you and bless you, Nomin, and I will be praying for you!
